Mexborough & Swinton Crawl 6th July 2013

I got a cheap train ticket from Nottingham to Mexborough but would end my pub crawl in Swinton as it has a better train service to Sheffield
I had passed Mexborough many times on train and always noticed the South Yorkshire pub in the distance, have a guess which fully functional pub in Mexborough was the only one that did not open.
I doubt many people go to Mexborough for a day out and even less would walk round its estates in search of pubs.

Mexborough

1: Montague Arms

A decent looking pub with a nice curved frontage.
This pub was on the opposite corner to the Old Market Hall Wetherspoons where i planned to start my pub crawl,but the Montague Arms was open at 10.15 am so i was straight in for a drink.
There was a large single room which had an island bar and a DJ rig plus a pool table, there was a tatty carpet and bench seating.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Smooth which was a pretty poor drink.
The pub was fairly busy and a bit rough and ready, but i was happy enough until Cliff Richards came on the sound system singing some crap, i had to make a quick exit to the Wetherspoons.

2: Old Market Hall

A Wetherspoons pub that is housed in an old market hall hence the name.
One very large room inside which was divided up by bookcases which did not work in my opinion.
I had a drink of  Geeves Clear Cut which was a very refreshing drink.
I should have took my time with this drink as real ale is not on in most of Mexborough's pubs.

I did a walk down the pedestrianised High Street to get to my next pub.

3: Bulls Head

There were two small rooms either side of the entrance, the right hand room had a pool table in it and was empty, the room to the left was quite busy with some very lively locals, i had  a drink in this room, there was also a larger room to the rear which was empty.
There was bench seating and small stools for seating.
No real ales, i had a drink of John Smiths Extra Cold which was extra cold and extra crap.
I soon got talking to the locals and one of them must have got on with me as he offered to buy me a pint, i declined the offer as i had lots more pubs to do.
very much a locals pub that some would feel out of place in, i was happy enough having a crap drink here.

I walked off the High Street and onto Bank Street where i found a new bar.


4: Memories Bar

Housed in a old stone building, this bar looked crap from the outside but was even worse inside.
There was a smallish square shaped room with the bar to the front right, the seating was very strange with two long tall tables and stools there were lads sat facing the bar watching rugby,with nowhere to sit i propped the bar up.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of  John Smiths Extra Cold which did refresh me after walking round trying find another pub that would open before 12 and failing.

I walked back down the High Street as it was now just gone 12 so the pubs should be open by now, they were.

5: Boy & Barrel

Not the best of looking pubs but i will go in any pub.
There was a decent sized room inside which seemed decent enough to me, there was a pool table on a raised area and a DJ rig.
There was comfy bench seating and chairs.
No real ales on, i had a drink of keg Stones Bitter which was a decent enough drink.

6: The Falcon

A decent looking pub situated at the West end of Mexborough's shopping street.
There was a small bar room to the right which looked very nice and a larger lounge to the left, both rooms had very comfortable bench seating, there was a pool table in the bar room.
The pub is an Old Mill tied house so i was well pleased, there was one real ale on which was Old Mill Bitter, this was a very nice drink.
A very pleasant and comfortable pub to have a drink in, i really liked this pub.

7: The Imperial club & brewery

I know i bang on about not liking clubs and not being allowed into them, but i was assured that anybody could tip up here.
I was allowed in and it was not too club like, the brewery was to the front and you could see people working in it, there were a couple of rooms one had a pool table, the seating was comfy bench type.
There were five Imperial real ales on, i had a drink of Imperial Bitter which was a very nice drink.
A shame that i had the place to myself.

I walked back through the town centre to get to my next pub.

8: The Sportsman

A large looking pub that is situated at the bottom end of Adwick Road.
There was a single opened out room that had different areas, there was comfy bench seating and a pool table.
No real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Smooth which was a pretty poor drink.
The pub was quite busy with a good mix of locals.
I quite liked this pub just a shame there was not a real ale on.

While in the Sportsman i realised i had forgot to do a pub/ club which was closer to the town centre, i had to retrace my steps and go up a side street.

9: Concertina Band Club

This place looked a bit grim from the outside and once inside it seemed like a club which i do not like drinking in, but i was allowed in despite not having a GBG on my head.
There was one large room which had comfy bench seating, there was a stage but it was not in use as it looked more like a storage area.
There were four real ales on, i had a drink of Concertina Club Bitter which was a decent drink and cheap £1.56 a pint.
The pub /Club was almost empty on my Saturday dinner visit.
Not my sort of place at all.

I walked to the East side of Mexborough where there were three pubs fairly close together.

10: George and Dragon

A decent looking stone built pub which is set sideways onto Church Street.
The pub was quite smart inside with a single room which had different areas, there was a dining area to the right which was empty and a conservatory to the far right had  a pool table in it.
There was comfy bench seating and normal tables and chairs.
Two real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Cask which was a nice drink.
The pub was fairly quiet but there were people in the garden as it was a very warm day.
I thought this was a very pleasant pub that would suit most peoples tastes.

11: New Masons Arms

A large stand alone pub situated on the busy Doncaster Road.
The room had been opened out but had different areas, the front area was comfortable being carpeted and having comfy bench seating, the rear area had a pool table and darts board.
There were three unclipped pumps on the bar, no real ale then, i had a drink of John Smiths Extra Cold which was a pretty poor drink.
The pub was fairly busy on my Saturday afternoon visit.
A decent and comfortable pub.

12: The Ferryboat

A nice looking pub that is set sideways onto Church Street.
When i first tried to do this pub the landlord said he was not quite ready to open.
When i returned a bit later he was ready.
The pub is very pleasant inside being carpeted and having comfy bench seating, it had an olde worlde feel to it.
There were three pumps all unclipped, this left John Smiths Smooth, asked for a drink of this and the landlord said he would buy it as i had come back, he went onto say that real ales did not sell or Guinness due to lack of custom.
This is a very pleasant and comfortable pub to have a drink in.

I walked up Harlington Road and past the Star Inn which i would do on my way back.
My next pub was on an estate off Harlington Road.

13: Dog Daisy

A modern looking estate pub and just the sort of pub i like to go in.
There were two separate rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was fairly big and had comfy bench seating a pool table and a darts board, a very comfortable room to have a drink in, the lounge was larger and looked even more comfortable.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of Worthington Cream which was drinkable and quite cheap.
I thought this was a very pleasant pub to have a drink in.

14: Star Inn

A bare brick built pub that is situated on Harlington Road.
There were two separate rooms inside, i had a drink in the lounge which was to the front, this room was carpeted and had comfy bench seating and normal tables and chairs, the bar room to the rear also looked smart and had a pool table in it.
The pub is a Samuel Smiths tied house, there were no real ales on, i had a drink of keg Samuel Smiths Old Brewery Bitter which was a very nice drink and cheap at £1.80 a pint.
I quite liked this pub, one i could settle in for a session.

I had to walk back towards the town centre and then up Park Road to get to my next pub which was just North of the town centre.

15: The Park

A very large looking pub.
There were two separate rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was very comfortable being carpeted and having comfy bench seating, the lounge was larger but not in use as there was a birthday party going to take place in it.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Smooth which was a poor drink.
The bar room was very busy with a mixed bunch in on my Saturday afternoon visit.

I did a complicated walk through Mexborough's finest estate to get to my next pub which was well away from the middle of Mexborough.

16: The Highwoods

A large looking estate that serves the Highwoods estate that is around it.
There were two separate rooms, the bar room was packed and no seats available or anywhere to prop the bar up, i made a massive mistake by going in the lounge which was quite big and had bench seating, this room was being used as a kids play room with them charging around and jumping on the seating ,i have no problem with children but not when they take over an whole room.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Smooth which was a pretty poor drink.

I walked back to the middle of Mexborough to do my last pub there before doing the short walk to Swinton.
But the South Yorkshire was not open and it was after 5PM on a Saturday.

Swinton

17: Robin Hood

A decent looking pub that is close to other pubs in Swinton's small shopping area.
There was a single room inside with the bar facing, the room was carpeted and had leather bench seating, there were three unclipped pumps on the bar.
No real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Smooth which was a poor drink.
This is a decent pub just a shame there was not one real ale on.

I did a short walk away from the middle of Swinton to get to my next pub as i wanted to end up close to the train station.

18: Ring O' Bells

A decent looking white painted pub that is close to a church.
There was a single irregular shaped room inside which was carpeted and had comfy bench seating, the pub had an olde worlde feel to it.
There was one real ale on, this was Concertina Bengal Tiger which was a very nice drink.
A very pleasant pub that was quite busy on my early Saturday evening visit.
If anybody knows what country or what the flags outside represent i would be happy to know.

I did a short walk off the main road to get to my next pub.

18: The Sportsman

The pub had two rooms, i had a drink in the bar room which was comfortable and had a pool table in it, the lounge looked smarter.
There was one real ale on, this was Kelham Easy Rider which was a very nice drink.
There was decent background music playing and live group was setting up in the lounge as i was leaving.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a drink in.

19: Cafe Sport

A modern bar that is opposite the Butchers Arms.
The bar was packed outside on my early Saturday evening visit, so i was surprised to find it empty inside.
A single room with a wood tiled floor, leather settees and leather chairs for seating, two TVs were blasting out modern music.
There was one real ale on which was Black Sheep Bitter, this was a decent enough drink.

20: Butchers Arms

A 70s built pub that is set in Swinton's shopping precinct.
There was a smart lounge to the front where i had a drink, this room was carpeted and had bench seating, there was a separate bar room to the rear which had a pool table in it.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of Stones Bitter which was decent enough.

21: The Station

A large decent looking pub which is next to Swinton's train station.
There was a smart bar room where i had a drink, this room was carpeted and had comfy leather bench seating, there was also a pool table in this room, the lounge was larger and looked very smart.
There were two real ales on, i had a drink of John Smiths Cask which was a very nice drink to end my pub crawl on.

This was a great day out on a really nice warm day in two South Yorkshire towns that most people will never visit.

 



 

 


 


 

Manchester, Blackley, Moston, Harpurhey & Collyhurst Crawl 13th November 1992

This was a pretty simple pub crawl, get a bus from Piccadilly Gardens and get off at the top end of Rochdale Road and then a walk down Moston Lane and back and a walk down Rochdale road doing any pubs i saw and a walk into some of the rough looking estates which are just off Rochdale Road.

Blackley

1: Alliance Inn

A decent looking estate pub that is not really on an estate.
The pub had the usual two roomed layout inside with a decent bar and a smarter lounge.
When i did the pub it was a Boddingtons tied house with a decent drink of Boddingtons Bitter on.
A decent pub to start my pub crawl in.

Moston

2: Mowers Arms

A decent looking pub that is situated halfway along Moston Lane.
The pub was fairly basic inside but comfortable enough,it was also empty on my Friday dinner visit.
When i did the pub it was a Bass tied house, there were no real ales on, i had a drink of keg Bass Mild which was decent enough.

3: Museum Inn

A nice looking large old pub that is in the middle of Moston and close to the shops.
The pub had a few different rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was quite nice.
The pub was a Wilsons tied house when i did it, there was one real ale on which was Lees Bitter 90p a pint, i had a half, this was a decent drink.

4: Blue Bell

A large and grand looking pub.
The pub was very comfortable inside with very comfy bench seating and plush carpets.
The pub is a Joseph Holt tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Holts Bitter which was a really nice drink and cheap at 89p a pint,there was also Holts Mild on.
A really nice pub that i wanted to stay in for longer.

5: Ben Brierley

A large pub situated on the corner of Moston Lane and kenyon Lane.
The pub had a few different rooms inside and was quite smart and comfortable.
The pub was a Bass tied house, there was one real ale on which was Stones Bitter, this was a very nice drink, though a bit expensive at £1.20 a pint.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a drink in.

6: Bricklayers Arms

A decent looking pub that is at the Rochdale Road end of Moston Lane.
There was a decent sized bar where i had a drink and a lounge that was in darkness.
This was a Wilsons tied house, but there were no real ales on, i had a drink of keg Wilsons Bitter which was a pretty poor drink.

7: The Moston

An estate pub that is set in the back streets of Moston.
I had a drink in the bar room which was quite busy, there was also a lounge.
The pub was a Whitbread tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Chesters Mild, which was a nice drink, there was also Chesters Bitter on.
I quite like doing pubs like this.

Harpurhey

8: Old Loom

A plain looking town pub that is on Moston Lane but in the Harpurhey area of Manchester.
There were two rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was almost empty and it was fairly basic.
This was a Bass tied house, there were no real ales on, i had a drink of keg Bass Mild which was ok.

I now had to do a short walk onto Rochdale road.

9: Golden Tavern

This pub is situated on the corner of a very busy road junction and on the opposite corner to the Top Derby pub.
There were two rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was decent enough.
The pub was a Wilsons tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Lees Bitter which was a decent enough drink and cheap at 90p a pint.
The pub was not rough at all and a pleasant place to have a drink in.

10: Top Derby

Renamed from The Derby Inn because there was a pub called New Derby further down Rochdale Road.
There were two rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was fairly basic.
The pub was a Wilsons tied house, there were two real ales on, i had  drink of Holts Bitter which was a really nice drink and cheap at 89p a pint, there was also Vaux Bitter on.

11: Two Hundred

A box shaped estate pub that was just off Rochdale Road.
I think the pub was called Two Hundred after 200 years of brewing at Boddingtons brewery.
This was a Boddingtons tied house, the pub was quite smart inside and also comfortable with bench seating.
There were two real ales on, i had a drink of Boddingtons Mild which was a nice drink, there was also Boddingtons Bitter on.
Despite the outside appearance this was a decent and comfortable pub to have a drink in.

12: The Hipp

A top notch looking estate pub that is situated in a fairly quiet area of Harpurhey.
There was a brash and busy bar room where i had a drink and a smarter lounge.
The pub was a Joseph Holt tied house ,so i was well pleased.
There were two real ales on, i had a drink of Holts Bitter which was a really nice drink and cheap at 89p a pint, there was also Holts Mild on.
I was well pleased in doing this pub.

13: Ark Royal

Another great looking estate pub that was on the same estate as the Hipp which it was also fairly close to.
There was the usual two rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was quite busy on my Friday afternoon visit, there was also a more comfortable lounge.
The pub was a Robinsons tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Robinsons Bitter which was a nice drink, there was also Robinsons Mild on.
Another pub that was was well pleased to do.

I walked back onto Rochdale Road and after a short walk down it i soon found my next pub.

14: Golden Lion

A decent looking town pub.
There was a basic bar room which was empty and a smarter lounge which was busier, i had a drink in the lounge which was very comfortable.
The pub was a Whitbread tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Chesters Bitter which was a nice drink, the other real ale was Chesters Mild.
A very pleasant pub to have a drink in.

15: The Shiredale

A top notch estate pub on an estate just off Rochdale Road.
There were two rooms a very lively bar room and a smart lounge, i had a drink in the bar room.
The pub was a Wilsons tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Lees Bitter which was a decent drink, the other real ale was Wilsons Bitter.

16: Jolly Miller

A great looking estate pub that was on an estate off Rochdale Road.
The pub had a smart lounge and a more basic bar room where i had a drink, this room was fairly busy on my Friday afternoon visit.
The pub was a Greenalls tied house but still had Greenall Whitley signage outside.
There was one real ale on which was Greenall's Bitter which was a bland drink.

17: The Milan

A stern looking pub situated on the corner of a busy road junction.
Inside the pub was very basic and not the sort of pub i would like to settle down in.
The pub was a Robinsons tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Robinsons Bitter which was a decent drink, the other real ale was Robinsons Mild.
I did'nt really like this pub that much.

A decent looking town pub situated on a side street just off Rochdale Road.
There were two smallish rooms inside,i had a drink in the bar room which was a decent room to have a drink in.
The pub was a Greenall's tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Greenall's Bitter which was nothing special.

19: Billy Greens

A top notch estate pub situated on a grim looking estate just off Rochdale Road.
The pub still had its Chesters signage outside.
There were two rooms inside, i had a drink in the bar room which was fairly busy, the lounge looked smarter.
There were two real ales on, i had a drink of Chesters Mild which was a decent drink, the other real ale was Chesters Bitter.
I was well pleased after doing this pub.

20: The Robert Tinker

A grim looking estate pub situated on a very run down estate.
The pub was smarter inside with two rooms, i had a drink in the lounge which was very comfortable being carpeted and having comfy bench seating.
The pub was a Banks's tied house, there were two real ales on, i had a drink of Banks's Bitter which was a decent drink, the other real ale was Banks's Mild.

To get to my last pub i walked from Rochdale Road and onto Oldham Road.

21: The Wheatsheaf

A small  and basic pub.
I had  a drink in the bar room which was pretty basic.
The pub was a Bass tied house, there was one real ale on which was Stones Bitter, this was a decent drink to end my pub crawl on.
Sorry about the photo of The Wheatsheaf it was getting quite dark.

This was a great pub crawl and i did nine estate pubs.

 

Hull Crawl 30th April 2011

My intention was to do every pub in Hull,i had already done a lot in the city centre,this pub crawl was round Wincolmlee and the North Hull estate where most people will never walk round never mind doing the pubs there, i also did areas nearby.
I had to get a train down from Beverley as we stayed at my sister in laws house in the town quite a few times over the years.
It was a walk from Hull Interchange up to Wincomlee and then onto Beverley Road and the North Hull Estate.

Wincolmlee

1: New Cumberland

A pretty grim looking pub in an equally grim area of Hull.
Once inside the pub was a lot better with a single room and a longish bar,there was a snooker table in the middle of the room,which i like to see,there was also a pool table and darts board.
There was one real ale on the bar which was Tetley Bitter,this was a decent drink.
The pub was a lot better inside,i quite liked this pub.

I walked onto Beverley road and got a bus up to the North Hull estate where i would get off as soon as i saw a pub.

North Hull Estate

2: The Greenwood

A very large pub situated in the middle of the North Hull estate.
Once inside there was a large L shaped room to the front which was quite comfortable with bench seating and being carpeted,there was another large room to the rear which was in darkness.
There were no real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Tetley smooth flow, which was a pretty poor drink.
The pub  was very busy on my Saturday dinner visit.

I quite enjoyed walking round the North Hull estate looking for some decent looking estate pubs,i passed one that was not yet open but looked fully operational.
I was well pleased to see my next pub open.

3: Arctic Ranger

A top notch looking estate pub that most people would avoid if not local,i could not wait to get in.
There was a split level room to the front with the lower area being smaller,the bar was on the upper area,there was comfortable bench seating a room to the rear was not in use.
There was one real ale on which was John Smiths Cask, this went down very well.

After a short walk i found my next pub.

4: Pint & Pot

This pub looked more modern that the other pubs on the estate.
Once inside there was a large single room which was quite smart and carpeted.
The pub was a Mansfield tied house,there were no real ales on here,i had a drink of Mansfield Dark which was drinkable.
The pub was fairly quiet on my Saturday dinner visit.

I walked along Hall Road and onto Beverley Road,my next pub was a short walk up Beverley Road on the Northern edge of Hull.

North Hull

5: Rising Sun

A typical looking roadside pub that may have been 30s built,but i am no expert.
There was a single L shaped room inside that was mainly carpeted,there was comfy bench seating and food was being served, but did not take over the pub.
There were two real ales on,i had a drink of Jennings Cumberland,which was a decent drink.
A decent pub in my opinion.

I was now walking back down Beverley Road doing any pubs on it.
After a short walk i was outside my next pub.

6: The Wheelhouse

It looked like a 70s built pub and just the sort of pub i like doing.
There was a single L shaped room which extended quite a way to the rear,the pub looked quite smart inside and there was a carvery.
The bench seating which was in bays was very uncomfortable,i was glad to get up after fifteen minutes sat on it.
There were two real ales on,i had a drink of Thwaites Wainwright which was a decent drink.

Another very short walk and i was in my next pub which was next to a very busy road junction.

7: The Pilot

A modern looking pub situated on the corner of Beverley Road and Greenwood Road.
The pub was quite smart looking inside with comfortable bench seating and being carpeted,it was almost empty on my Saturday dinner visit.
There were no real ales on,but there were four keg beers, i asked for a drink of Mansfield Dark,which i quite like,but was told it is off, so i went onto Mansfield Bitter but was told this was also off, so i asked for a drink of Mansfield Smooth and guess what i was told it was off, this left Marstons Smooth Crap which was on and was crap.
The pub was very quiet with no TVs, music or customers.
I was very dissapointed with this pub.

A short walk along Beverley Road and i was in my next pub.

8: Cross Keys

A large mock tudor pub on the corner of Beverley Road and Endike Lane.
Once inside the pub had two separate rooms,i went in the bar room to the left,which looked smart ,there was comfy bench seating and a pool table, the lounge to the right looked very smart and food was being served in it.
There were four real ales on, i had a drink of  Moorhouses Blonde Witch, which went down well.
The pub was busy and had a good atmosphere.
I quite liked this pub.

I decided to walk up Endike Lane as there were a couple of pubs to do along it.

9: Lord Nelson

A typical looking estate pub of the sort i really like going in.
Once inside this was a really nice pub with two rooms, i had a drink in the main bar room to the right, there was very comfortable bench seating and it was part carpeted, there was a TV showing sports, the room to the left had a pool table in it.
There was one real ale on, i had a drink of John Smiths Cask which was a very nice drink.
The pub was busy with a good mixed bunch in.
A top pub that i really enjoyed having a drink in.

I carried walking along Endike Lane until i got to my next pub.

10: The Endike

A very large pub that looked decent enough from the outside.
Once inside there was a large room to the front which was carpeted and had comfortable bench seating, there were two pool tables in this room, the room to the rear was also large and had two full size snooker tables in it, with both in use.
There were three pumps on the bar with one in use, i had a drink of Mansfield Cask Bitter, which was a decent drink.
I quite liked this pub.

I walked off Endike Lane down to Inglemire Lane.

11: Spotted Dog

A very strange looking pub.
The bar room was to the right and was fairly basic, there was a pool table which was separated from the main room by a small wall, the rear area was up one step, there was comfy bench seating.
There were no real ales on, i had a drink of Mansfield Dark which was a decent drink.
There were mainly older drinkers in on my Saturday afternoon visit,i had a good chat with a couple of  older women.

I walked down Hall road and onto Cottingham Road to get to my next pub.

12: The Goodfellowship

A very large suburban pub situated in a leafy area.
The pub was quite smart inside with mainly normal tables and chairs plus a few tall tables and chairs for seating, there was a separate room which i thought would be used for functions.
The pub is a Marstons house there were three real ales on, i had a drink of Marstons Perfect Union, which was a nice drink.
The pub was quite busy with a lot of people having meals.
Not really my type of pub.

I walked along Cottingham Road towards Beverley Road to get to my last pub of the crawl.

13: Old Grey Mare

A large pub which is opposite Hull University.
There was one large room with a family dining area to the rear.
There were three pumps on the bar with one in use, i had a drink of Adnams Bitter which was nothing special.
The pub was packed with students which was no surprise.
I am sorry about the crap photo i took of this pub.


I walked along Cottingham Road to Beverley Road and got a bus to Hull Interchange and then a train back to Beverley to meet my wife.

This was a nice pub crawl done on a very pleasant Spring day.
